Join our Team – Support Consultant £20 – £25k

As part of our continued growth we are looking for a number of people to join our great Support and Installations team, looking after our solutions for our products around the UK and beyond.

To support our growing customer base we are looking for a number of support consultant/technician’s to help us maintain our level of support to our new and existing customers.

SalamanderSoft currently consists of 13 employees, the majority of which are operations/support staff. It is a small close-knit company and our ethos is to provide excellent service to our customers and to be the best at what we do. This is reflected in the fact that all our sales are via word of mouth/recommendations – we do not have a sales team, and we are still growing strongly. All our roles are remote working, so you will be working from home.

We have a great reputation with our customers and are looking to grow the team that work with our customers to support this and continue to improve where we can.

Who we are looking for

We’re not looking for exact skills as we will train you in any you do not have, but on a day to day basis you might be working with:

  • Active Directory
  • Office 365 including Azure Active Directory
  • Exchange
  • G Suite – all parts of it
  • Querying SQL Server
  • School MIS systems such as SIMS.net
  • PowerShell
  • REST APIs

Any experience of these would obviously be an advantage.

As this is a remote role you will need a suitable area for working in your home, a broadband connection and probably a kettle.

This is very much a customer focussed role, and regular customer contact via Phone/Skype and email will be essential.

With technology being such as fast-moving field, we would expect you to have a thirst for knowledge and be keen to improve your skills, with a proven track record of doing so.

What you will be doing

You will be joining the existing support and installations team (currently made up of 9 people) to help us remotely install and support our range of products into schools and other Education institutions across the UK and further afield.

You will be working primarily with our Integration solutions, linking the school’s MIS to Active Directory, Office 365, G Suite for Education and other systems.

Our work is conducted from our own homes, although some occasional travel and hotel stay may be needed to allow us to meet as a team and best support our customers.

This is a hands on, customer facing, technical role.

Salamander for School Data Sync – Free Utility update

Since the initial release of Salamander School Data Sync (SDS) in May 2017 there have been a few requests from customers for new features. This new version adds two of those features along with some minor bug fixes:

Support for reading the ‘Home’ Email address from SIMS
Previous versions could only read the ‘Work’ Email address from SIMS. This feature adds the ability to pull the ‘Home’ Email address instead.

Support for Progresso REST API
This version adds support for Progresso’s REST API.

Fix for new SDS Profile Validation
Fixed an issue where some sites were failing validation when trying to upload files to SDS.

Salamander Integration Suite – Housekeeping report

As you work with a production Active Directory it’s all too easy to lose track of what accounts and groups are configured and in use. There are some brilliant Audit tools available which can help, but few are geared towards Education and many are complex to setup and use.

To help our customers tackle this, we’ve added a feature we are calling the Housekeeping report to the Salamander Integration Suite.

This feature, available to all customers of the Salamander Integration Suite working with Active Directory is designed to trawl AD and report on the status of the directory.

On first release (available from 1st February 2019) it will report on the following items:

  • Pupil Users not matched with the MIS
  • Staff Users not matched with the MIS
  • Users who have never logged in
  • Users who have not logged in within 30 days
  • Users who have not logged in within 60 days
  • Users with Domain or Enterprise Admin rights
  • Users with expired passwords
  • Users with passwords set to never expire
  • Disabled Users
  • Users with no group memberships
  • Users with a primary group not Domain Users
  • Groups not updated in 30 days

The output of this will be a simple HTML document to allow the user to quickly review the information output and decide if any action is needed.

Going forward, the reports available will be customisable to suit your needs.

Multi Academy Sites
Although this build will work for sites with multiple schools in the Domain or the Salamander Installation, the initial release will not provide a school by school breakdown.

How do I get it?
The new viewer is available to all new and existing Salamander Integration Suite customers working with Active Directory.

Salamander Integration Suite – Status Viewer

Status Viewer is a new interface which is being added to Salamander Integration Suite. Available from 1st February, this utility will help customers view the status of their installation and aid in troubleshooting.

Features

The initial release supports the following features:

Read configuration information

The utility will display some basic information regarding the installation of Salamander. These options cannot be updated but can exported to be sent to support for troubleshooting purposed.

Display license information

On loading the tool will check for licenses, looking for the valid licenses for Salamander and where applicable Sims Writeback.

If it finds a valid license it will display it and change the colour based on the following

Expires in 60 days or more = green
Expire in less than 60 days = orange
Expire in less than 30 days = red

If no valid licenses are found a message is displayed.

Update Salamander Integration Suite

On occasion an update to Salamander might be required to support changes to External services or to add new features. The utility will allow you to check for new versions and easily update Salamander if it is needed.

View Created user information

Information around the accounts created within Active Directory is stored in CSV files inside the installation folder. The utility will allow you users to quickly access and search this information. It is also possible to export this information for use elsewhere.

Display Logging Data

The utility allows users to view the logs output by the installation of Salamander that it is running with. This feature will read up to 3 months of logs and allow filtering, sorting and searching of that information.

Given the size and quantity of the log files it can take a few moments for this information to load.

Display Logging Status

When the application is loaded it will count the number of Errors and Fatal messages in the past 3 days’ worth of log files to help the user identify any issues.

It will also identify if no logs have been found for the past 3 days to identify those sites where the application may have failed to run.

View the status of configured Scheduled Tasks

The utility will allow you quickly view and run the scheduled tasks configured for Salamander on this machine.

Update encrypted properties

The utility allows users to update the encrypted passwords stored in the application, which will allow you to update the passwords for systems like your MIS and Exchange and update Salamander without needing to give us access to the password.

How do I get it?

The new viewer is available to all new and existing Salamander customers working with Active Directory, Office 365 or GSuite.

New version of the FREE Salamander Salamander School Data Sync utility released

Since the initial release of Salamander School Data Sync (SDS) in May 2017 there have been a few requests from customers for new features. This new version adds two of those features along with some minor bug fixes:

Support for non UK CSV Headings
The utility can now output the CSV files using either the US or UK Schema headings. This allows the utility to be used with O365 Tenants outside of the UK without adjusting the outputted files.

SIMS.Net support for reading connect.ini
SIMS.Net users can now load a Connect.ini to gather the Database and Server details allowing users to get the utility up and running quicker.

Free Salamander School Data Sync Updated with new features

Since the initial release of Salamander School Data Sync (SDS) in May there have been a few requests from customers for new features. This new version adds two of those features:

Effective Date
Effective Date is a process which allows the user to define the date on which the export processes run. During Holiday period’s it may be useful to set this to look at the student, teacher and class information at a particular date rather than the date of running the application.

This allows the utility to help the provisioning of SDS for new Academic Years and/or Terms before they start.

Toggle output CSV with missing details
By default the utility will output, to the CSV files, the details of every user it finds in the data from the MIS. This will include those without complete details which could cause sync issues with SDS. This version now adds the ability to, optionally, remove the details for any missing students/staff.
